Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you do need a travel insurance. The projects will not have insurance for you except for if you are registered at one of the universities, which you will have to be if you are a medical-, physio og medical student
You send an email to either Ida or Cecilie with an English motivated application and a CV. That includes a description of what you have done until now and what your interests are. You must add a scan of your passport’s picture page and a criminal record in English. And also state the dates you intend to be in Cape Town.
After that we’ll set up an interview with you, where we in cooperation with you match your education, your skills, experience and wishes with our projects. After that we take care of the application to the projects, signing of educational contracts etc. for you as well as helping you sorting out all the documentation for the visa.
Yes, you do need a travel insurance. The projects will not have insurance for you except for if you are registered at one of the universities, which you will have to be if you are a physio- or medical student. Some social educator students do need to register with a college too.

Your stay generally can be just the length you want. It depends, though, on the project you want to work at, as we only accept volunteers for 3 months or more at some of our projects. This we do because of the impact you have on the children, but we will obviously match it to the length of your internship.
We always strive to send down groups at a time. You’ll meet the others at the seminar before departure.
Yes, there will be! You arrange your holiday with your employer/project – just like any other workplace. Generally, the organizations have a good understanding of you wanting to experience South Africa and her neighbours. Of course you’ll have to arrange this according to how well you are achieving your goals for your internship. We suggest that you budget approximately 10.000DKK for a real meaningful ZA tour. We recommend www.ajtouring.com for tours.
Upon your arrival to Cape Town you’ll be picked up and accommodated at a hostel for a few days, while you find your accommodation for your entire stay. Most students/volunteers arrange to share apartments living 2, 3 or 4 together, which will be organized at the seminar. You choose your own apartment and sign the contract yourself.
If you have given your work a fair chance and/or you experience that you cannot solve the problem, then contact your co-ordinator, Tony Sickle.
It varies from place to place but generally it is expected that you have a 20-35 hour workweek. This will be clearly defined at the beginning of your work period and you need to meet the requirements from your institution in Denmark. You arrange this with your employer.
We know, it’s a big decision to totally change environment and be ready for new challenges far away from family and friends.
We want to assure you, that we’ll do our outmost to make that the best decision you’ve ever made! Cape Town has such a diverse culture, and you get a chance to experience it all, no matter which institution you chose. Through the years, we have built up a great reputation and a fruitful relationship with a number of great institutions. Projects where you’ll get experience in working with really vulnerable people ranging from babies to adults. Unfortunately the legacy of apartheid is still present and the extent of poverty, abuse, domestic violence, malnutrition, illiteracy etc. is huge. So offering voluntary work to our cooperating institutions really makes a huge difference for both the clients and the staff.
Through an initial interview with you, we’ll find the perfect matching institution for you depending on your study, interests and both life- and professional experience.
You’ll be challenged on your professional approach with respect of your level of education, and you’ll get a unique opportunity to further developing your skills under the supervision of highly qualified local people. In addition to that, we offer you help and guidance when needed through Tony, who is a true Capetonian.
Cultural understanding is of great importance to us, and that’s why part of our service includes a compulsory weekend seminar before you leave for Cape Town with attendance of the three of us. We’ll give you lots of in-depth information about your project and the history and culture of South Africa. Previous student-volunteers will attend as well to share their best tips.
